What should I say to my best friend?

The friendship is breaking up as whenever i see my best friend and i avoid him as i don't know what to say to him and he avoids me.Sending him a SMS is easier as i don't see him and probably likewise to my best friend.So,yeah,i want to know how to start a conversation in this generation without messing things up.
