Why do people describe God/Allah as loving, almighty and merciful?

Both the Bible and the Qu'ran clearly state that God is loving merciful and almighty and the punishments are stated by those same books as appropriate. This leaves the reader with the simple choice of accept the book's judgment or reject the divine inspiration of the book.
